Sandwich Panel Types: EPS, Polyurethane and Rock Wool Compared

Sandwich panels largely determine comfort and safety in prefab buildings and containers. We compare the three common types by thermal, fire and acoustic performance.

Prefab and Containers
Sandwich Panel Types: EPS, Polyurethane and Rock Wool Compared

A sandwich panel is a ready building element with insulation between two metal faces, used for walls and roofs of prefab buildings, containers, steel warehouses and cold rooms. The core material sets thermal, fire and acoustic performance.

EPS panels

Light and economical with good thermal insulation, but combustible, so not suitable alone where fire risk is high. Used for site offices, temporary buildings and economical containers.

Polyurethane (PUR/PIR) panels

Higher thermal insulation for the same thickness, good moisture resistance; PIR offers improved fire behaviour. Suited to cold climates and cold storage.

Rock wool panels

Non-combustible mineral insulation with excellent sound insulation; the first choice for dormitories, kitchens, industrial and public buildings. Heavier and needs correct moisture detailing.

Choosing thickness

Thickness depends on climate, duration of use and energy targets. Roof panels are often one step thicker than walls.

Frequently asked questions

Which panel is best for containers?

EPS for short-term use; polyurethane or rock wool for dormitories or cold regions. See our prefabricated products.
